I use CAT

CAT (Computer-Aided-Translation) tools allow me to provide my clients with savings in cost and turnaround time. Often, it turns out that phrases, sentences, or even whole paragraphs repeat in a text, sometimes word-for-word. Such "word-for-word" or exact matches get a 100% discount. Sometimes a sentence will repeat with only minor variations each time, these are called "fuzzy matches", and also deserve a discount. These repetitions can only be discovered using the advanced statistical analysis systems that I have much experience with.

OCR & CAT: Cost Savings and Challenges

OCR, or optical-character-recognition, is taking on more and more importance for translation buyers and producers. The reason is that translators themselves usually charge by the word, not by the page. If there are repetitions in the text, CAT (computer-aided-translation) technology can automatically translate those repetitions.

Most of the texts I get are faxes or poor scans, making CAT statistical analysis impossible. Even good scans are difficult to make a computer text document from.

With over 500,000 words of documented experience, I am a US-based Russian-English & Polish-English translator. My portfolio includes work directly for and in the interests of Russian, Polish and American blue-chip companies and energy majors, lawyers and other professionals, and people from all walks of life. Born and raised in the USA, I was awarded a BA degree after completing his Russian Philology studies in Polish at Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland, and Georgetown University in Washington DC.
